"Adverse conditions in Emergency Department"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

Went via ED yesterday for admission and  thru no fault of any nursing or medical staff there were no beds. Many patients waiting admission sat on chairs along the corridors deprived of sleep when already unwell.

The abuse that staff took was unbelievable-but all that I witnessed was managed in a professional manner. Over this 36 hour period the numbers were to high to keep account of.  Sick people wanting beds-again nothing staff could do but would they listen. Sick people wanting seen immediately or threatening to leave. Time nursing staff spent trying to pacify patients was lost nursing time.  Credit to all the staff I met,  with their dedication and professionalism working in such adverse conditions.

Dear Camp83

Thank you for those kind words regarding the staff. Unfortunately there are large numbers of patient who remain in the emergency department waiting on admission beds.

Kind regards

Paul Smyth

Head of ED
