"Poor mental health service"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Adult mental health

(as a service user),

I was admitted to ward 2 in Queen Margaret hospital following two attempts to take my own life on consecutive days. This is on the back of dealing with a recent trauma, childhood trauma and difficult home life.

During my 4 week admission, it was only week 3 of my admission that any member of the nursing team had a conversation with me and was then aware I had trauma. I was verbally abused for days on end by another patient, all day, every day. When I first raised this concern I was met with a comment that suggested as I was on a mental health ward, there was little they could do about it. The abuse I was being given is not something anyone who had recently been raped wanted to hear.

Moving forward, notes were passed on to the psychiatrist each week to form part of my review. As no member of staff interacted with me, only to give medication and then sat behind closed doors for the rest of the day, it is unsure what information could possibly have been passed on. This person's opinion of me and the way in which I was spoken to was undesirable to say the least. I needed support and I was failed. They seemed more interested in telling me I will always have thoughts of wanting to die (in their words) and treatment would not help me with this. They knew as I told them, I will try and try again until I am successful. They apparently did not and do not care because someone like me will "always" think like this.

I was restricted from visitors for the last 3 weeks and not able to leave the hospital during this time either.. even after providing TWO urine samples one after the other to show 0 drugs in my system, I was still put on lockdown. I was discharged a few days before Christmas with even less medication than I had prior to the admission and during the admission and home life is worse.

I received no discharge plan, the psychiatrist put the fear into my children's social worker and told them I had been prostituting myself and had refused safety and stabilisation during my admission, even though this was only suggested a few days prior on my third review. I was not, have never been and never would prostitute myself and it's a disgrace that a psychiatrist is allowed to say these things on the basis of nothing.

I was handed papers a day or 2 before I was kicked out. When I began to talk about what was on the papers, I was that they don't go into this while in hospital. Absolutely flabbergasted.

I did not consume 1 meal during this 4 weeks as I struggle with food and have done since I was raped - not once was I provided any help with this either.. in fact, the nursing staff weren't even aware there was (and still is) an issue however when one particular nursing assistant was on shift, they would at least try and obtain a simple banana or rich tea biscuit to encourage me to eat.

I have personally worked on many mental health wards as a student and this is the worst ward by far, it felt like the nursing staff do not care. They want to give you drugs and then hide away, throw a little PRN at you if you're struggling but it felt like they dont actually care as to why. The nursing assistants are too busy on constant observations for drug dealers. There is zero care and this ward should be investigated for its failings in my experience.

Dear slidedx37

My name is Deon Louden, and I am the Clinical Services Manager for Adult Mental Health Services. Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback about experience in hospital recently. I am so sorry this was your experience; this must have been very frustrating and difficult for you. This does not reflect the high quality of care, treatment and support we wish to provide for all people experiencing mental health difficulties in hospital.

I would welcome an opportunity to discuss your concerns further and I would be grateful if you could contact my personal assistant Ann Bain on 01334 696004 Ext 56004 to arrange a suitable time to contact you. We want to provide all patients with a positive experience, and it would be really helpful if I could listen to your story and learn from it.

Thank you again for sharing your story, Deon
