"People in need of urgent care being let down"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

Can someone please address the dreadful situation at A&E Wishaw.

I had to wait for over 5 hrs with my seriously ill brother. The waiting room was full to bursting and continued to get busier.

Once my brother was admitted I investigated further. I was told that a backlog occurs when patients cannot leave the A&E and the beds in the wards are not cleared and ready to receive patients.

We waited 12 hrs for my yet again gravely ill brother to be admitted, even though we were sent by our GP.

In my view, this A&E is not fit for purpose. The front facing staff are under huge pressure.

I am sure there is a short term solution to this problem as a long term one is worked on. It is the people who are in most need of urgent care who are being let down the most. It is actually heart breaking.

This problem has to be solved urgently.

Dear Concerned Patient,

Thank you for sharing you and your brothers experience at University Hospital Wishaw, Emergency Department.

I am sorry to hear that your brother was very unwell. I am also sorry to hear about the wait time in the emergency department and then for a bed on admission. As you are aware we are under great pressure at the moment in emergency departments but also across the acute sites. Unfortunately I am unable to comment on the specific time you attended University Hosptial Wishaw, but would like to reassure you that we are aware of the situation and pressures and are taking steps to try and resolve this as best we can.

If you would like to discuss this further or wish to have a personal response, please can I ask that you contact our Patient Affairs department in University Hospital Wishaw on the below details who will be able to investigate further.

I hope that your brother is recovering well.

Kind Regards,

Jenni

Update posted by Concered Patient (a relative)

This is a dreadful, generic response to a serious and dangerous situation. My brother is not recovering. He has cancer.

What is the organisation doing to resolve this problem in A and E? What is the immediate plan to resolve this situation? What is the long term plan?

Do you go to the A and E department to address the problem and inform the patient of what is happening when they have been waiting hours? How often do you go to A and E to help address this terrible long term problem?

This is a scandal. It's shameful.

This is totally disrespectful to the sick and in pain people who are having to suffer the in dignity of Wishaw Generals A and E department.

Can I remind all in the NHS that you are educated and paid by the patients. Tax payers money.
