"Lack of follow-up care"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I recently attended Minor Injuries at Monklands University Hospital by ambulance after twisting my knee whilst turning in the shower, which caused acute pain and I could not walk unaided. I am a widow who lives alone.

I was given an X-ray, told it was likely soft tissue injury, checked over by an ANP to see that I could walk on crutches and discharged with an exercise leaflet. I was not seen by a physio or an OT and no follow-up was organised for me. I was told to stick with going up and down the stairs on my bum as this is what I had managed prior to attendance at hospital.

I can still only walk with the aid of crutches, I cannot straighten my knee, the pain is the same and I have lost all of my independence. I keep myself fit and healthy, I am on no medications and have rarely required NHS input. My daughter is now stressed out, as am I, as we try to get onward referrals.

It is clear I need Orthopaedic intervention and I believe this should have been done at Minor Injures, or at least to a clinic for further assessment to ensure I will recover to my baseline ability.

Dear MY46,

Thank you for sharing your experience of University Hospital Monklands, Emergency Department.

I am sorry to hear about your knee injury and that even though it was checked by an ANP and some pain relief prescribed, it has not improved and is impacting on your life.

In order for us to better understand this, and look into your specific case, could I ask that you contact our Patient Affairs team at University Hospital Monklands who will be able to investigate and provide you with a personal response. Their contact details are as follows,

PatientAffairs.Monklands@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

Tel no 01698 752300

I hope that you begin to feel better soon.

Kind Regards,

Jenni
