"I will never get that time back and I was completely let down"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Neonatology Perth Royal Infirmary / Community Midwifery Unit

(as the patient),

I was pregnant with my first child, I had started having some strange feelings and having worries so contacted my midwife 3 times. After seeing my midwife and her telling me nothing is wrong without doing any checks on me or my baby.

I then went into early labour at 24 weeks, I was having contractions and had to travel to dundee triage to be seen and was checked 4 times to find out I was in labor and 6 centimetres dilated.

I was terrified and still have PTSD from the birth of my son and his first few months of life, he had to fight for his life in the NICU for 106 days before I could be home and safe with my son.

I will never get that time back and I was completely let down by my midwife, she did not do her job and keep me and my baby safe at all and I'm still very angry and disappointed by her lack of care.

Dear Sambafc36

I wish to congratulate you on the birth of your baby, and I am so very pleased to hear you are both now settled and well at home, after an understandably apprehensive time for you and your family supporting an extreme preterm baby within our Neonatal Unit, and the impact this has had with yourself and your family as you describe.

I am very sorry to hear your experience during your pregnancy within our service was not felt to be positive or supportive in relation to the concerns you raised to your midwife during this time. I would like to thank you for taking the time to provide feedback to our service, as it can offer an invaluable insight into all elements of care provision within our service. I would be very supportive of reaching out to you within service to discuss your experience in further detail, to ensure any opportunities to improve care can be taken forward.

My email address is stephanie.gardiner@nhs.scot and I would encourage you, if you feel comfortable, to send an email with your name and date of birth and if you would wish to meet in person, to offer assurances to you we wish to consider all feedback within the service

We also provide a service called birth reflection which is available to you if you wish. Birth reflections is a confidential one off appointment which a midwife will spend some time with you in your choice of place, to go through any questions you may have around your experience. This is open to anyone who has care in Tayside. We accept self-referrals from women, birthing people who have birthed their baby in the NHS Tayside area. There are no referral forms; all the service requires is a self-referral with name, date of birth and address to Tay.birthreflections@nhs.scotand.

I wish you and your family all the very best, and look forward to a potential meeting opportunity with you in the near future

Warm wishes

Stephanie Gardiner
