"Could not ask for nicer people."

About: Oncology / Radiotherapy Perth Royal Infirmary / Endoscopy

(as the patient),

I started my radiotherapy treatment in November. This is my second time round - I had breast cancer 2 years ago and now have bowel cancer and might also have throat cancer. I think the bowel screening system works well as I sent mine off, got a phone call two days later and was seen in Ninewells the following week. Two weeks later I had a colonoscopy and was then given the bad news by the doctor in Perth who was very gentle in the way he told me.

My treatment in Radiotherapy has been excellent - could not ask for nicer people.

One suggestion I have is that people should be told to bring a change of clothes - in case there is an accident. This happened to me and it was very embarrassing. If I’d had a change of clothes it would have been so much easier to deal with the situation.

Another thing I do is bring a little squeezy bottle of juice with me - makes the water easier and more pleasant to take.

Car parking is, needless to say, a big problem. My partner brings me in and usually waits in the car or goes for a coffee to the Maggi Centre. He is a very private person but benefits from talking to the folk in the Maggi centre. They give you lots of information and look after partners as well, which I am grateful for.

Dear Yanyan1, thank you very much for taking the time to feed back your experience in our Radiotherapy Department. My name is Bob, one of the Support Workers who would have welcomed you into our department. It is very gratifying to hear that you could not ask for nicer people than our Therapeutic Radiographers. I will certainly pass on your kind words.

I am appreciative of your suggestions regarding the change of clothes and a small amount of diluting juice for the water some patients need to drink in preparation for treatment and likewise, I will pass on your suggestion to the Oncology Support Nurses who provide information to patients prior to treatment. You are also quite right regarding parking. We are conscious of the difficulties regarding parking and I can assure you that this is something that our Head of Therapeutic Radiotherapy takes to departmental meetings to highlight how stressful this can be for our patients. Maggie’s is, indeed a lovely, relaxing and informative place to spend some time.

On behalf of all our staff, I hope you have benefited from your treatment and wish you well.

Kind regards... Bob
