"Painful hysteroscopy"

About: North Middlesex Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I had one done in 2015 to remove a lost coil. I had no idea that a local anaesthetic was available until the procedure had started & had to be stopped. After the LA it was bearable and they continued with it ok.

For the same reason I had one recently but made it clear that I would not go ahead without a LA. However, I am now PM & despite the LA it had to be stopped due to my severe pain - I can only describe this as the attempt to push an instrument that felt like it was red hot and covered in shards of glass into my uterus. Apparently, the cervix narrows & becomes stiff after menopause & it is difficult to do & very painful. I was pouring with sweat & I felt I would pass out if it continued.

I am not a complainer & have gone through childbirth without pain relief.

IMHO, this should never be attempted in PM women without adequate pain relief, it is barbaric, in my view.

I am now waiting to have this done under GA.
