"Altnagelvin Accident and Emergency"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Emergency department

(as a parent/guardian),

We had to take our 2 and a half year old to A and E at Altnagelvin as she had split her head open after a nasty fall.

I was dreading taking her there following the media recently regarding the waiting times.

We arrived and were quickly seen by a lovely nurse and student nurse for triage, they gave my little girl a selection box which kept her entertained.

We were seen about 2.5 hours later by a lovely Dr Singh who was friendly and very efficient.

We were very pleased with the care we received especially knowing how stretched they are. It was a very busy afternoon in A and E.

It is a shame there is not a larger, more kid friendly environment within A and E for children. There were quite a few children in A and E, who were observing all sorts coming through the doors which can be frightening for a young child.

Hello Joaqt37,

My name is Michelle Scott Patient Client Experience lead for the trust.

Thank you for taking the time out to submit your story onto this platform. I hope you find care opinion helpful.

Requiring emergency care can be scary and I can understand your feeling of dread when hearing of high waiting times within an Accident and Emergency Department. The trust do try to keep the general public as informed as possible and advise where we can but I can appreciate this may sound scary and thankfully you were quickly seen by a lovely nurse and student nurse for triage who gave your little girl a selection box.

I was delighted to hear you were very pleased with the care received and have passed on your feedback to all staff within the department who were equally as pleased. we really do feel valued with compliments such as yours.

I have also passed on your feedback regarding the children's waiting area. We do have a sensory room also available for children who may require this as well and we are trying our best to utilize the space we have to the best of our ability aiming to see and treat as many as we can in a timely manner which sometimes can be out of our control based on clinical need on what a patient presents with.

Wishing you and your daughter all the very best

Michelle Scott
