"It felt like there was no concern and felt extremely embarrassed"

About: Sexual Health Services - South Staffordshire (Open Clinic)

(as the patient),

My experience was very overwhelming. I went in to a doctor who did not make me feel comfortable at all. I felt awkward and uneasy. There was no reassurance before the procedure and I was told to get on the bed ready.

The procedure started and there was little explanation of what the Dr was doing, they explained they was cleaning the area and the I felt an horrendous pain in my cervix/womb, my eyes started to water from the shock and nurse asked if I was okay and to breathe.

The doctor then proceeded to say oh the cervix has now closed from the shock, let’s try anaesthetic, so I lay there for around 3 minutes with the speculum in, scared and overwhelmed whilst we waited for the anaesthetic. Doctor the put the anaesthetic in and said they would now try again to fit the coil. The pain started again to this time be told that my womb is now in spasm, I was clearly distressed. They said it cannot be fitted and I will have to rebook.

It felt like there was no concern and I felt extremely embarrassed and overwhelmed and in pain. The nurse was lovely I will say they were very attentive and made sure I was okay. However I feel like the coil fitting should have not felt the way it did and this doctor was too heavy handed leaving me distraught, upset and now reconsidering whether to even get the coil as the procedure could not go ahead.

The reception staff were so helpful and could see I was upset and handed me tissues. They have since rebooked myself to another doctor who I hope to have a more considerate experience that’s if I do decide to go ahead.

I cried the whole drive home and since after reflection wanted to raise this as this should be dealt with. Please reassure your patients, something like the coil fitting isn’t the most glamorous thing and feels uncomfortable so having a little compassion and empathy wouldn’t go a miss. Also not being so heavy handed because I’m also certain I shouldn’t felt pain like I did.

As mentioned the nurses and reception were exceptional, thank you for your support.

Thank you.
