I would like to express my thanks to the excellent teams who were involved in my care at Golden Jubillee. I was admitted to Ward 2 West Enhanced Recovery in mid November for elective hip replacement.
From the minute I was admitted I experienced professional staff who delivered person-centred care. I was asked what was important to me and for me it was getting home. It was clearly highlighted the 7 steps required to achieve this. This is an excellent visual as it allows you to focus on each step and what is required to move to the next one.
SCN Dawn in Ward 2 West was a visible leader and she should be proud of the team she has developed. Dawn took time to explain my care and provided reassurance. As a patient it is important to feel safe and confident in the people delivering your care.
On day of admission, I was reviewed by pharmacist who ensured all medication was correct. I was then reviewed by Dr Matiaki anaesthetist. I immediately felt less anxious as she explained what would happen, allowed time to ask questions but most importantly was compassionate. I then had my hip replacement surgery explained in detail by Dr Roberto (apologies I can’t recall full name). He explained this fully allowing me to ask questions and provided me with confidence. I had review by ANP before meeting my consultant Mr Welsh. Mr Welsh was compassionate and explained the planned surgery and answered any questions and what to expect. I was made to feel safe.
I was second on the list the day of surgery. I was transferred to orthopaedic theatres just after 10am. The staff were excellent and although I was slightly anxious everyone made me feel safe. Dr Matiaki who was responsible for my anaesthetic I could see was very safety focussed. She fully explained what she was doing and what I was required to do to obtain best position. I felt reassured as the patient. This was important to me. Mr Welsh reassured me as I went into theatre. I have no further recollection until I was in theatre recovery. The staff were excellent and whilst monitoring my vital signs ensured they fully explained the surgery.
I was transferred back to Ward 2 and transferred onto the chair recliner. This was very comfortable and allowed me to feel ready for moving to Step 4. SN Anna monitored me closely and provided excellent post-operative care. Unfortunately, due to my BP being low I was delayed to the following day to progress Step 4. Mr Welsh came in early evening and fully explained the surgery undertaken and importantly reassured me it had went well. It was evident that he cares about patients and achieving the best outcome.
After this, the focus was on rehabilitation. Mr Welsh reviewed me again and provided me with reassurance re BP being low and answered all my questions. The physiotherapist Catherine provided me with support and confidence. She came back twice and provided encouragement and had excellent knowledge. I was delighted to be able to pass assessment on mobilising and stairs. OT Alli undertook her assessment, and I was delighted to be provided with equipment to support me going home. I had my x-ray and bloods checked and I felt confident that I was now moving towards Step 7 of discharge.
I was discharged home that evening just over 24 hours post-surgery. I felt very confident in going home and was aware what to do if any issues and the ongoing rehab required.
There were so many staff to remember names however, every member of staff provided excellent care. I would like to pass my thanks to all the team members in Ward 2 West Enhanced Recovery, Orthopaedic Theatres, Mr Welsh and Dr Matiaki. I am very grateful and delighted to be making very good progress. This was team working at its best.
"I am very grateful and delighted to be making very good progress."
