"My mum’s treatment"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Acute Medical Receiving Unit (AMRU) University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department University Hospital Hairmyres / Radiology

(as a relative),

We visited A&E recently after my mum had a fall and was complaining of severe back pain. After waiting 26 hours she was moved to a ward and they done some tests. She was very anaemic and they decided to give her a blood transfusion for this. They also done a couple of scans and although one came back clear the other one showed something and we were told that she would need further tests and a biopsy.

I was confused that after telling us this she was released and told she would get an urgent appointment in for this. I phoned for a few updates when we hadn’t heard anything and it was then we were informed that the doctors had discussed doing things differently and even though they had seen something on the scan they have decided to wait and do another scan before anything further.

This is very concerning because surely if they notice glands that that they were concerned about why would you then leave them even longer with the chance of them growing and getting worse. Since then my mum had an appointment for bloods and 15 days later we haven’t heard anything. She has an appointment for the respiratory clinic but still nothing about a scan.

My mum has been in agony since her visit and has had to visit the GP on a few occasions since. Not only are we very concerned about the length of time for an urgent appointment, but also that the back pain she originally went to hospital about is more severe than it was and she is finding it hard to move about or even stand.

The GP has referred her to physio but as it stands now this doesn’t seem feasible with the amount of pain she is in. We feel that the communication has been very misleading and confusing. As a family we are very disappointed with her treatment so far and don’t know what steps to take next.

Dear Wkd79

I am really sorry to read about your mum’s recent admission, your concerns in relation to communication and her ongoing pain. As Lesley says, we would like to offer you and your mum support and feel it would be beneficial to personally discuss your concerns.

Patient affairs will be the appropriate initial contact as detailed by Lesley.

I am sorry that your mum had such a long wait in the emergency department and that a clear plan and time frame for ongoing investigations were not appropriately communicated.

I hope to hear from you soon to progress these issues.

Thank you

Lise
