"Poor care and attention that my mother received"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Acute Medical Unit (AMU) Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Daisy Hill Hospital / Discharge Lounge Daisy Hill Hospital / Elective Overnight Stay Centre/Gynaecology Ward

(as a relative),

My mother was admitted to hospital via ambulance recently and was taken into the holding section of A&E. She was then moved to a ward but she stated that the toilet or her room had not been cleaned from when she entered the room.

Due to suffering psoriasis she had been scratching and bleeding and her sheets had not been changed for three days and it looked like a theatre sheet. Only after she asked if they could be changed before her visitors arrived, as no creams offered or applied. I also had to change her pyjamas several times due to blood showing and no assistance offered to her.

Due to light head she required assistance to toilet, when she asked the staff stood and discussed their weekend plans, leaving her to wet herself and then tutted when she asked for them to help her change herself. I had to shower my mother (when we got laundry removed and could get into shower room) to try and settle her skin as the blood by now was running out of her and no assistance was ever offered to her even when she asked.

Then the discharge -  she was moved to discharge unit so quickly that half her items where left behind.  My mother actually stated if you throw a dog out you would at least pat it on the head first. I asked if there was any change to her medication and informed no just call and collect her, but I stated I had read her medication list the night before and she had a new tablet and I would not collect her until they dispensed them, as it now takes 72 hrs to get a prescription from GP surgery.

No reason for the episode was found and then 3 weeks later we were back due to her falling at night when getting up to use the toilet and hitting her face on door edge due to light head, leaving the left side of her face cut and bruised.  She was referred to the falls clinic, and when we went it had been cancelled. It was a physio she seen who didn't need to see her but no one told us this, as I was reassured that the falls clinic would look into light head and her DC1 and DC2, but of course nothing.

Three weeks later we were in Daisy Hill due to another episode. She was admitted for two nights for tests, once her heart condition was ruled out she was discharged again with the light head not solved. In the discharge unit I asked about medication and what tests were carried out, the nurse looked at me and said I don't know.  So this is me home again, hopefully for more than another three weeks.

I work in care setting and I would never dream of treating any of my clients in this manner, it was such a disappointment. I think if the staff would think about their tone of voice and stop talking to each other their patients might receive a better service.

Dear Sportyharte

I am the Lead Nurse for AMU in Craigavon Hospital and I am truly sorry to read this regarding your mother's experience. Can I ask you to please reach out via email to rachel.greer@southerntrust.hscni.net and provide your mother's name and date of birth to allow me to fully investigate this and discuss with the individual staff who were involved in looking after her.

Kind regards

Rachel Greer
