I was very emotional and apprehensive to take part in the 6 months programme provided by the dietitian. Starting the process I had such a fear of food and had categorised them into “good” and “bad” groups. I restricted myself often in the aim of losing weight. The consultant was so kind and patient with me - showing empathy and compassion when I became upset.
Over the course of the programme I was encouraged and supported to change my negative and controlling views around food and along the way I was educated thoroughly on the food groups and why they are important for health (this included learning the positives of food I had deemed “bad”)
The course wasn’t always easy but I always appreciated the fact I was reminded it isn’t always a linear journey. I was trying to undo years of unhealthy and unhelpful habits.
From arranging the appointments to attending them I was always met with a friendly welcome and it really did seem like those working with me were rooting for me to find a healthier way of viewing foods, my diet and my appearance.
The consultant was very understanding to other health issues that I have and again educated me on how they can affect my weight and relationship with my body.
Although change has been scary and at times very hard I can proudly say I’m leaving the programme with a better relationship with myself, food and my health in general.
I am so grateful to the whole team at the dieticians and I must praise their hard work. They really have been invaluable.
