"Lack of communication"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Acute assessment unit Forth Valley Royal Hospital / GP Out of Hours

(as a relative),

My husband became unwell recently and I contacted NHS24 as we could not control his temperature at home and he was becoming increasingly worse. He was seen in the early hours at OOH, and from there admitted to AAU, where he had bloods taken very quickly on arrival and advised he would be commenced on IV antibiotics.

Although his observations were within normal limits (apart from his temperature) there didn't appear to be any real interest in how he was feeling. His heart rate was above 90 which isn’t high, however for him as an individual it is nearly double.

This general theme continued for the 3 days he was in the hospital. There were several occasions my husband requested observations as he was feeling unwell and it would be found his temperature and heart rate were raised. Even on reporting worsening symptoms, nursing staff advised they would contact doctor, however no visit from doctor for nearly 48 hours.

Overall generally disappointed with the care received due to lack of communication and nursing staff seemingly being focused on numbers rather than the patient as an individual.

Dear McLaren239

Thank you for sharing your feedback via care opinion.

From your story I can hear that the care your husband received during your time within the acute assessment unit was not to the expected standard. I am sorry to read that you felt communication was poor and care not person centred.

I will share your feedback with the relevant teams for learning and reflection as your experience is invaluable in demonstrating how care feels for our patients and their families accessing our service.

Your perspective will help us understand areas where improvements can be made. I would really appreciate the opportunity to discuss this with you in further detail.

My email address is pamela.scott@nhs.scot

Best wishes

Pam
