I recently attended the Day Intervention Unit at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy.
Shortly before my appointment time, a Mr. Murray called me through to the unit and I was allocated a bed in the Day Surgery Unit. I was scheduled to undego a biopsy for a lump under my left armpit.
Immediately on being allocated a bed, Lisa offered me a cup of coffee which was very welcome. I was then attended to by Marion who did blood pressure checks etc and the staff nurse inserted a canula in my left hand.
I then met Claire, who went over the admission notes with me and explained how the procedure would go. Claire took me through to the theatre where I met Dr. Brush, a true gentleman, who outlined the procedure he would carry out using ultrasound.
Despite prior warning, the local anaesthetic was completely painless as was the biopsy. Other than slight pressure I can honestly state I did not feel a thing. It took a very short time and I was back in the ward. After more coffee and toast I was allowed home.
My sincere gratitude to Marion, Lisa, Claire and Dr. Brush for the professionalism and dedication. They made the whole process a joy to be involved in. I thoroughly enjoyed my brief stay with them. I would suggest that making patients about to undergo procedures that being over anxious and nervous need not be the case as these professionals know what they are doing and are very good at it.
Prior to admission I was only armed with the literature sent out by the hospital and some of it be construed as grim reading. To all the staff involved with me, you have only further enhanced the high regard I hold the NHS in. Thank you.
"My sincere gratitude for the professionalism and dedication"
