I have had quite a few colonoscopies but the one I had a few weeks ago in Inverclyde Royal Hospital was horrendous. I was told that I would be partially sedated and that I could ask for the procedure to be stopped at any time.
When I had the sedative I felt no effect whatsoever compared to all the other times. I was not worried about this as I was given a colonoscopy once before without any sedation at all and it was not too bad an experience.
The procedure started and was OK at first. As it carried on I was in quite a bit of pain which quickly got worse. The sedation did not help one bit and I questioned this but I was told that I was given the correct dose for my age and health issues. I was told to press my stomach to try and pass some of the gas out that is used in the procedure but as I was attempting this, more gas was being introduced.
By this time I was in agony. I have never experienced pain like this before and I have had heart operations, both legs cut open to remove veins for a bypass and had a stent in my carotid artery.
I asked for the procedure to be stopped but I was ignored and had to suffer more and more. I repeatedly asked the nurse to stop but again and again I was ignored and just told to press my stomach.
Eventually, after what seemed like hours, the procedure came to an end and I was told that the problems were all my own fault and I had brought it all on myself. Lovely caring staff, don't you think?
