"Medical overshadowing"

About: Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust Queen Elizabeth Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

I have struggled with Mental health for around 4 years now. Antidepressants & therapy has been a positive reinforcement for me given past trauma. Around 3 years ago I was rushed to A&E due to  severe abdominal and left flank pain. The usual bloods/obs were taken and past history documented. Waiting times were extended at the time due to COVID-19. A doctor and two trainee med students came into the triage room I was allocated stating that all my bloods and observations had come back clear, with no concerns.

They then went on to explain that A&E is for emergencies only and not for psychiatric patients, they told me I was just drug seeking, it was fair to say I felt so belittled. I was discharged and this pain continued, My GP prescribed me strong painkillers that was only just touching the pain. On multiple occasions my partner had to ring for an ambulance due to me blacking out from pain and becoming so lethargic due to not being able to keep fluids/food down.

On my 5th admission I admitted to taken an overdose due to feeling so low and just needing the pain to stop. PLT came and spoke to me and I explained just how debilitating this pain was and how I’ve lost all trust and hope in healthcare professionals. Anyway fast forward the PLT were my backbone they recommended I was seen at a different hospital. It was then I was finally listened to and turned out I actually had a diagnosis of kidney cancer. I seen this doctor again a few months ago for them to reply I see you finally found a way to be treated…I generally didn’t know what to say.
