My dad took a stroke in early hours of the morning. After admission to J North (IRH) he was transferred to G North as he has COPD, which is more worrying than his stroke, at this point. He was on 15 litres oxygen and his sats were not holding.
Myself and my sister took turns spending the night with him as he kept trying to remove his oxygen mask and staff were not checking on him regularly, despite him being on high levels of oxygen. Some of the staff were outstanding - one nurse who came in every hour, and also a student nurse who I think will make an amazing nurse one day.
However, I found one of the nurses on night shift quite condescending. They argued with me that my dad's weak side was his left when it’s not, it’s his right. They also scolded my sister for asking if his sats were holding. They told my sister that she didn’t need to ask and they they decided when to check them.
I also raised that his good arm had started to swell. My dad was seen by 3 doctors who did not even as much as touch the arm and told us it was nothing to worry about. His consultant came in and his arm was the first thing they saw. Turns out he had a blood clot in the arm which would have been missed despite us raising concerns. We were so glad when he was finally moved to stroke ward.
