"Heart valve replacement surgery and rehabilitation"

About: Fife Community Services / Community Cardiac Specialist Service Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Cardiology & Coronary Care Unit Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Cardiothoracic Surgery Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with aortic stenosis, and also atrial fibrillation.  When my symptoms became really bad, I called NHS24 and was taken to Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy A&E, and admitted.  The cardiac consultant there said that I needed a new heart valve as soon as possible.  A week later I was transferred to the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, and had the operation the following day.  Nine days after that I was discharged into the care of my sister.  I stayed with her for two weeks before going back home, where I live by myself.  Since then I've been in the care of Fife Cardiac Rehabilitation Services.

The entire experience for me was made as easy as I think it could be, by the exemplary care I've received from everyone, from the ambulance crew who took me to hospital, to the cardiac rehabilitation nurse that I talk to regularly now.  It has really bolstered my faith in humanity to have the help of so many caring people, when I needed it most.  10 out of 10 for everyone!
