Home after what can only termed as a rather stressful 24+ hours.
My son's pacemaker went into meltdown. It was pounding on his chest and causing him considerable pain.
I called the hospital where the pacemaker was fitted and spoke to someone from the pacing team, who said they’d calm me back.
About an hour later, as I hadn’t heard back from them, I called 111.
The operator advised me to take my son to the A&E dept at Lincoln County Hospital.
As soon as we arrived we were booked in, triaged and within an hour. My son had also had bloods taken, a chest X-ray and seen a Dr. I was in awe of the speed of their service. So huge thanks to the team there.
The A&E Dr informed me he’d asked someone from their cardiac team to come and see my son, so we just had to sit and wait.
Beth from cardiology appeared - this was awesome as she knew my son from his time going to Lincoln County for pacing checks.
When Beth tried to get a reading from my son's pacemaker it refused to give up the data. Eventually it gave in and she saved it to a data stick.
Next to wait for a bed. The first one my son got was elsewhere in A&E with more lovely people, especially Nurse Emma. My son loved his room with its fun lighting and pictures on the wall. I got a chair. We both got a little sleep.
My son was moved to the Cardiology Short Stay Ward. He got a lovely room with his own bathroom. I still got a chair, albeit a slightly larger one.
Beth was back in the morning with her machine and attempted to call the pacemaker manufacturer. With their support, Beth reprogrammed my son's pacemaker. The pounding stopped and my soon was at peace. Beth advised me they would want to monitor my son for 24 hrs so I set about getting ourselves more organised.
A nurse advised me that the pacemaker manufacturer had advised Beth to run some more tests on my son and if the results came back normal, to send him home, and that is just what she did.
I cannot thank the entire A&E staff, the night and day team on the Cardiac Short Stay Ward enough for their care and due diligence. In fact I’d like to thank all the staff at Lincoln County Hospital for everything.
My son personally thanked as many staff as he could when we left them, it was touching to watch.
I’d like to thank my son for being a gracious patient and entertaining fellow patients and staff.
We can now rest and life can return to normal. But a huge, huge #ThankYouNHS , you are amazing and I am in awe of you all. From consultants down to cleaners, and so does my son. 💖
