"Ward 101 / Discharge Team."

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Acute Medical Initial Assessment Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Cardiology / Coronary Care Unit Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Discharge Lounge

(as a relative),

My relative is now home, discharged after barely 18hrs from admission.

I find his physical treatment from ward 101 / discharge team abhorrent to say the least.

First received call in the morning from discharge team stating that they were looking to discharge him. Questioned this as he had barely been in hospital 12hrs.

At this point I was told that he had still to be assessed by physio and I stated my concern that I hoped the assessment would be vigorous and not a pass if he did a function once.

Was told that further discussion on his condition would happen at 12pm, by 12:05pm I received another call that he was being discharged but medication and discharge letter had to be completed.

Stated that both my partner and I work till 5pm and also I had ARI appointment which takes 80mins from 5:30pm.

I also stated that I felt he should have been assessed over at least another day.

Received a call later in the afternoon saying that he is at discharge waiting area to be picked up...again explained that it would be after 7pm and was met with we close at 6pm. I informed them of my disgust that he was being treated like an unwanted object.

5:30pm received a call that he would be at ward 402 purple zone waiting.

On arrival his personal items were in his bag along with discharge letter and medication....no one had reviewed this and I had to get a nurse as had questions of it. He had been shoved into a side room and left.

He was still in what I would call a confused state and certainly not independently mobile, maybe on a flat level surface however that not how the letter reads such I question this assessment.

It states H@H team follow up yet as no one could explain this I am not sure when or where this follow up is to take place.

Prior to leaving I checked His personal items and notice his IPOD charger missing. I checked the room he was in at ward 402 then proceeded back to ward 101 and asked about this.

One staff member was not too helpful and stated personal items are not their responsibility.

His due care and attention were the staff's responsibility, including his personal items, as they decided to move him from ward 101 to the discharge area and then to ward 402.

It is terrible that a man who is over 90yrs has been treated in this manner, that charger to replace is £40 and that does not include the lead for it.

I will say on admission the Ward 101 staff were really good and attentive, however to kick Him out in such a short time I feel was premature and we never even had any discussion with a doctor on his condition.

Cheers,
