"Unacceptable care QEUH 10D"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Orthopaedics (Wards 10a, 10b, 10c &10d)

(as a relative),

My uncle was admitted to ward 10D following correctional surgery after a major trauma. The care he received the was very poor. When alerting staff that he needed the toilet or needed pain killers he was left waiting for hours until eventually they would respond. By then he was close to incontinence and his pain was unbearable. He spend approximately 3 weeks on the ward and there was little improvement in this time.

As his mobility improved he was able to make it to the toilet independently however his pain relief was inadequate throughout his stay. His bed linen never got changed for up to a week at time despite requesting this several times. On numerous occasions he requested urine bottles to be disposed off as they were full and again this was never done, this resulted in urine bottles being knocked over by domestic staff soiling his table, bed and personal items.

As a family we found it very difficult to locate staff and get updates on his progress, when phoning the lines where just ringing out and never answered. We had grave concerns throughout his stay in ward 10D.

Dear blueje97

I am very sorry to hear of your uncle's experience as an inpatient within the Orthopaedic department following his recent injury.

We take complaints very seriously and will investigate these concerns. However, from the information you have provided us we are unable to progress this as the Orthopaedic service requires more detail about your uncle.

We would welcome you to get in contact with the service via the Greater Glasgow & Clyde complaints department who will take more information from you regarding your uncle's hospital stay, to allow us to look into this for you. We will then be able to give you a detailed response. Please email complaints@ggc.scot.nhs.uk and we can begin looking into this for you.

Many thanks,

Morag Busby, Lead Nurse, Trauma and Orthopaedic services South Glasgow.
