"Music Therapy"

About: Kilbryde Hospice / Music Therapy

(as a service user),

I was offered Music Therapy sessions at the Kilbryde Hospice following the death of my husband from cancer and my mother, six months later. The circumstances of each death were extremely traumatic and I was not coping at all well. Shell shocked is probably the best description of my mental state.

Music therapist Anna was compassionate and caring and her sessions really helped me through some very difficult times. She enabled me to get out of the deep gloom and turn towards the future in a more positive way. The sessions were not always easy for me emotionally but they were necessary for the change to happen. There were lots of fun musical activities and she was always very encouraging and non-judgemental. She pushed me, in a gentle way, to try things that I had never done before and were quite out of my comfort zone but were extremely helpful, and I even surprised myself at hidden talents that I did not think possible.

I will always be thankful to Anna and grateful at being fortunate enough to attend her sessions. In my case, she is literally a life saver.

Dear magicianne

Thank you very much for taking the time to post such a wonderfully positive story about your Music Therapy sessions on Care Opinion. As Clinical Services Director here at Kilbryde, it is very reassuring to hear that your Music Therapy sessions helped you through the difficult times following your bereavements. To hear you say the sessions were a life saver is wonderful.

I'm delighted to hear that Anna's compassionate and caring manner resonated through your Music Therapy session to allow you to face the future more positively. Your story tells me that this wasn't always easy for you however in the safety of Kilbryde and in Anna's capable hands I can see that you feel you have made progress. That's good news.

I can imagine that telling this story may not have been easy for you either, however I'm very grateful to you for taking time to do so. Your story may encourage other people in a similar situation to you to seek professional support rather than persevere with poor mental health.

I will certainly feed this story back to Anna. This will give Anna and the rest of the staff and volunteers at Kilbryde a huge boost and encourage them to continue to deliver the services helping people and families in South Lanarkshire.

Thank you again. If we can support you in any way in the future please do not hesitate to contact us on 01355 202020.

Kind regards

Margaret Mary Cowan
