"Waiting times for urgent colonoscopy"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Endoscopy

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was referred from GP for urgent colonoscopy after a positive Q Fit test.  Having been to the GP on several occasions over a 3/4 year period with flare ups of the same symptoms. Procedure was carried out within 4 weeks and told 12 biopsies had been taken and results would be 2/3weeks. After 5 weeks passed, called asking for result to be told pathology was taking 12weeks!!  Regardless of several phone calls to the Dr's secretary he is still waiting for results and has never had a consultation with the Dr.  This is unacceptable to leave someone waiting this long when the procedure was classed as urgent. He is still suffering with symptoms and is not receiving any treatment. In light of the news stories today regarding patients from Glasgow who died as they had not been followed up after having the same procedure this is highly concerning.

Dear oscarhx83,

Thank you for sharing your son's experience waiting for results for a colonoscopy at University Hospital Hairmyres.

I am sorry to hear that your son has been attending the GP over a prolonged period with flare ups and symptoms and then he has had a positive Q fit test. I am pleased to hear that the test itself was done quickly following the referral however I am sorry that the incorrect information was given regarding the time frame for results.

In order for us to look into this further and provide an update and the correct timeframe, please could you contact Patient Affairs at University Hospital Hairmyres on the below details. They will be able to investigate this and provide a personal response.

PatientAffairs.Hairmyres@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

Tel no 01355 585 325

Kind Regards,

Jenni

Update posted by oscarhx83 (a parent/guardian)

For context the scope was performed in April!

He has just yesterday received a letter stating results all normal. No follow up or other investigations planned.

States reason for referral was it was an episode of diarrhoea with PR bleeding, which is inaccurate.

I feel like he should be getting seen by a specialist and further investigations carried out as what he is having is by no means normal.

Dear oscarhx83

My sincere apologies that your son has been waiting for results since April. It is clearly an unacceptable length of time and I also see that the reason for referral is incorrect.

As Jenni says, we would like to look into your son’s care in detail and therefore would be grateful if you would contact patient affairs to share further information.

Again I am sorry for the distress caused and please be reassured that we will look into your concerns as soon as we hear from you.

Thank you

Lise
