"Labour and maternity aftercare"

About: South West Acute Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I cannot thank the midwives in the labour ward of the SWAH enough for their kindness and help during the birth of my child.

However, I feel the care I received from different midwives in the maternity unit afterwards was awful. Very rude staff who in my view hadn’t a clue!

I believe staff were not keeping records of medication I was receiving, asking me what dosage and what time I received my medication. I also believe they failed to hand over information regarding my aftercare, which resulted in an extra night stay in hospital.

I am planning and preparing to transform maternity services by implementing the regional Continuity of Midwifery Carer model within the Western Trust

Dear Em746

Firstly, I want to thank you for taking the time for sharing your experience with us. All feedback is valuable learning and we share this with our teams.

Secondly, congratulations on the birth of your baby.

It saddens me to hear of your experience on the maternity ward, and I will discuss this with the wider team but please feel free to contact me directly if you wish, to explore this further. I have left my contact details below.

I will ensure to pass on your gratitude to the Labour ward team and share with wider maternity teams.

Warm wishes,

Mairead McCaffrey
