"Autistic child misdiagnosed again"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Accident & Emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter is ten. She is autistic and has suffered from renal complications since birth with significant UTIs. She also has Crohn’s disease.

I took her to A&E for the second time in 2 weeks on instruction of health staff. A doctor, who I have an open complaint about that has been going on for almost a year, was allowed to make clinical decisions surrounding my daughter.

Another doctor was overruled from treating, even though they examined and were in charge of her care, and wanted to treat urgently with antibiotics.

Another medic after speaking to the first doctor, became aggressive towards me. They advised that I needed to stop challenging doctors and go home. I was left shaken and crying and had to take my sick child home, who doesn’t clinically present the way other children do (and this is noted in her records by multiple professionals across multiple departments).

Two days later I was advised that my daughter had a serious UTI that required antibiotics, but she was then left a further 3 days without treatment and in significant pain. My daughter said to me, maybe the pain is in my head if the doctors don’t believe me?

It’s heart breaking how some staff are treating my autistic child and me as her parent. This could have turned into sepsis if left untreated.

Dear Jem2023,

We are sorry that you felt your and your daughter's experience whilst attending our hospital was not a more positive one. We would not wish for your daughter to have felt that she was not believed regarding her pain, and we are sorry this was her belief. I hope your daughter is now recovering from her UTI and is feeling better.

We also understand your daughter's complex needs and please be assured that we would never be dismissive of them in any way.

With regards to the doctors attending to your daughter’s care and treatment, I am unable to make a comment as I am aware there is currently an ongoing complaint being addressed.

Sending best wishes to you and your daughter
