"Clarification need over ward 2 visiting times"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Acute Medical Receiving Unit (AMRU)

(as a relative),

This is my 2nd time raising concerns via Care Opinion with regards to visiting times. My mother is currently in ward 2 and recently my sister in law attended the ward at approximately 13.40hrs and she was asked to exit the ward and wait outside until 14.00hrs. This caused her some embarrassment however she did so.

I was also visiting today and was asked to leave at 16.20hrs as it was coming up to dinner time and visiting was from 14.00hrs until 16.00hrs. I asked about the flexible visiting hours which is clearly stated on your web site and also NHS Lanarkshire visiting policy. I am aware that it is not ideal to visit during meal times and did plan on leaving.

My concern is that the staff nurse said she has worked there for some times and there has never been any changes in policy and due to ward 2 being a medical receiving ward it was different from the rest of the hospital. The nurse also directed me to laminated signs all over the doors advising visitors of the fixed visiting times which I did observe when I was leaving the unit and they are indeed on the doors.

Can you please confirm that ward 2 does not in fact offer flexible visiting hours and this is reflected both on your website and that the policy is updated to advise that following covid 19, the introduction of flexible visiting is in all the wards with the exception of ward 2 due to this being a medical receiving unit and is required to have fixed visiting hours?

If this is not the case I would appreciate if staff are informed of the new policy and that the signage  is removed as this causes embarrassment for all involved.

Dear Reillg

Thank you for contacting and raising your concerns regarding visiting times within the acute medical receiving unit, ward 2. I am sorry to read that there is a lack of clarification regarding patient centred visiting.

I have spoken at length with the Senior Charge Nurses of the ward to understand the information displayed within the ward and on the website. There is indeed guidance for fixed visting hours as feedback from patients has been that open visiting is not beneficial to rest.

However it is important that visiting is flexible to support the needs of individual patients and is managed in a person centred approach. I am sorry that staff are not fully understanding that fexibility is the key ensuring the patient is at the centre.

The website is being reviewed alongside ward signs and guidance.

Apologies for any embarassment caused

Lise

hi Lisa

I do not find this response helpful I would now like to move to a formal complaint. As the nurses asked a visitor to leave the ward and wait outside for 20 mins and also asked me to leave at 4.20 pm. I do not believe individual wards can make exceptions to what is a government directive following covid. Can I also say that the staff nurses had no ideas of patient centred care when discussing visiting hours it was a blanket “we have fixed times”

I will be forwarding onto the complaints department

thank you
