I was recently referred by my Gp to try and see the Gynae consultant I am known too in south eastern trust following some complications, I’m a complex case with a rare disease so I’ve previously had bad experiences that resulted in multiple trips to theatre so I now have a consultant who I’m known too that understands my disease. I had to attend a&e back in august but due to complexity they couldn’t do the required tests such as smear as I usually have them these done in theatre for safety as I’ve previously had a perforation due to the amount of ulceration I have. This meant Gynae refused to accept the referral from a&e as they wouldn’t see me until a&e did the exam which they decided rightly wasn’t safe, this left me in pain without any treatment and I was told to see my GP to try and sort it and I was refused a basic X-ray that was requested by the a&e doctor.
The GP followed the advice of the secretary the next day in terms of the referral as I’ve now been left with a ? dislodged infected coil which would have been easily sorted for the average person but I’ve now been left through something that isn’t my fault. My problem is I have now been lifted off the waiting list and sent to the independent sector which for some would be a good thing but due to complexity for me it is not as it would be unsafe given I usually have exams in theatre. I have spent 2-3 days phoning and being passed around. I’ve spoke to appointments, secs and independent sector offices etc. Essentially I have been told I need to attend an appointment in KingsBridge for them to decide it’s unsafe or too complicated and will inevitably leave me waiting even longer while I wait on a referral back and I am in pain everyday as it is, I’ve tried to explain this is a waste of an appointment that the NHS is paying for and someone else could hugely benefit from this appointment and I could see my own consultant who is usually very happy to fit me in. I feel that I’ve been caught in the red tape of the system and I’ve continually been told what I’m asking makes sense but it’s protocol.
