"My experience as a foster carer"

About: Neonatology / Neonatal Community Liaison Nurse Service

(as other),

I am a foster carer and I was asked to take a baby who was currently in the special baby unit. This baby was a neonatal abstinence syndrome baby (baby was born addicted to drugs and had been prescribed Morphine).

When I went to the ward I was very much made to feel welcome, staff were great at explaining all that had happened and what was going on with the baby. They answered all my questions and gave me reassurance when it came to caring for the baby.

Staff went through her discharge, which went through her medication and baby resuscitation. Home support took the form of setting up a WhatsApp group which meant I had 24 hour support if I needed it, which was such a relief. Sometimes you just need that reassurance that all is OK. This support continued whilst the baby was reducing in her medication, but even afterwards.

Dear Foster48

It is heartwarming to hear how well cared for you were during your time within our Neonatal department and when the baby was finally discharged home.

I will take great delight in sharing your story across our Neonatal team, I know this feedback will be gratefully received by those named and the team as a whole.

Thank you once again for taking time to share your story. Your experience is a wonderful example of the type of care we aim to deliver to all families who are in the Neonatal unit.
