I am a foster carer and I was asked to take a baby who was currently in the special baby unit. This baby was a neonatal abstinence syndrome baby (baby was born addicted to drugs and had been prescribed Morphine).
When I went to the ward I was very much made to feel welcome, staff were great at explaining all that had happened and what was going on with the baby. They answered all my questions and gave me reassurance when it came to caring for the baby.
Staff went through her discharge, which went through her medication and baby resuscitation. Home support took the form of setting up a WhatsApp group which meant I had 24 hour support if I needed it, which was such a relief. Sometimes you just need that reassurance that all is OK. This support continued whilst the baby was reducing in her medication, but even afterwards.
