"Child’s fractured elbow"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Surgery Crosshouse Hospital / Paediatrics University Hospital Ayr / Accident & Emergency University Hospital Ayr / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

Last week my daughter fractured her elbow at school. We attended UHA for x-rays before being transferred to UHC for an overnight stay and surgery in the AM. As a Nurse myself I wanted to highlight the excellent care my daughter received in both hospitals. Colleen the paeds emergency nurse at Ayr provided holistic assessment, ensured I was informed of all stages of process, communicated well with my daughter at at age and state appropriate level which helped alleviate my daughters fears. Colleen was also very supportive with the staff around her providing teaching around an elbow back slab.

We were then transferred to UHC and I can’t thanks Paediatric Staff Nurse Kaitlin enough. She was so attentive, listened to my daughter, comforted her twin sister and ensured I was informed all of the steps and post op advice. Mr Foxworthy ortho trauma surgeon was also great chatting my daughter through what would happen in theatre and Dr Wei the anaesthetist was fantastic- her cannulation skills are incredible- she was able to keep my daughter calm in the anaesthetic room and cannula her without her really even noticing!

What was an emotionally challenging time was made comfortable by the amazing staff and I am so grateful.
