"Why are patients woken so early?"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Care of the Elderly (Wards 13-16)

(as a service user),

To say I’m furious is an understatement, why on earth are patients on ward 15 woken between 5.30 and 6am every morning without fail? Why are there no showers on this ward? Is the answer, oh they’re all over 65 they don’t need their sleep and never use a shower anyway so why not get them up, just give them a bowl with water for a wash, then let them sit and wait for breakfast that was served from 8am. This is a rehab ward, sleep is the best medicine for patients in rehab as is showering it’s relaxing.

I witnessed a patient having an accident, were they washed? Absolutely not, changed and sat back in the chair which brings me to one staff member whose attitude was bang out of order with this patient, not acceptable at all, where’s the compassion? And the nurse who waved me away because they were waiting on someone to answer the phone, rude.

I’m well aware some patients need more attention than others, or are more difficult because of their illness, it’s a stressful job one that you don’t do for the pay, but you do it because you have that quality that makes you care.

One last thing you may know already: a visitor to the ward who was inebriated on their visits was bringing a patient a bottle of juice with alcohol in it, they were open about what they were doing on the bus.

Dear Alibalibee97

I am concerned to read your comments and feedback regarding the care on ward 15 and thank you for sharing. Both myself and Senior Nurse Jackie Baird would not expect any patient to be woken unless there is a safety issue in terms of observations or pressure area or skin care. As you say, sleep is important to every person and we need to promote appropriate rest at night and activity during the day.

Showers are available and again I would expect these to be utilised and support given to our patients as appropriate.

You have also detailed unprofessional behaviour and a lack of care and compassion. This is not the standard of care that I expect and I would like to offer my sincere apologies to you and your family.

Please be assured that your feedback is taken very seriously and we have shared your experience and reviewing practice. I hope that you are able to contact Jackie as further discussion and understanding will be beneficial.

Again I apologise for the standard of care provided.

We hope to hear from you and thank you for sharing.

Lise
