"I was advised to go home and come back in the morning"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I had a fall and attended hairmyres A&E with my injury, I was non weight bearing on my leg and in extreme pain, I waited 3 and a half hours only to be told minor injuries was closed for the night and if I wanted to be seen in the main department I had to wait an additional 8 hours, but it was advised that I go home and come back in the morning.

I did as advised but during the night the pain was too much and I went back to another A&E, where I was seen within 3 hours, only to be told I broke my leg!

Hairmyres sent me home in a non weight bearing broken leg without so much as an X-ray! They didn’t even offer me pain relief while I was waiting and I was screaming in agony! Absolutely pathetic. I’m disgusted that we’ve come to the point where people are sent away broken limbs just to save time.

Dear Qazwsx1

I am really sorry to hear that you were advised to go home after suffering such a painful injury. I would expect a full triage assessment and review of your injury and pain to see if it is appropriate for you to go home.

It is clear that we did not give the appropriate advice and I offer my apologies. I wonder if you would contact patient affairs on 01355 585325 or email PatientAffairs.Hairmyres@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

We will then be able to look into this in further detail.

I look forward to hearing from you

Lise
