"Cut off finger tip"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Royal Alexandra Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

Cut off my fingertip whilst cooking, attended Royal Alexandra Hospital A+E as I knew the wound needed a bit more than a plaster.

NHS24 had me waiting for 3 hours before I joined the same queue as everyone else in A+E and felt I could have just walked in at the time.

However, the waiting experience wasn’t too bad. We were waiting around 3 hours to be seen, saw the loveliest nurse practitioner Michelle who really calmed the situation as I felt the blood rushing off my hand once she’d unwrapped it.

I’m only 10 days postpartum, so having someone understand and sympathise I was still in pain elsewhere, whilst having my hand badly bandaged up isn’t ideal, she was able to support with suggestions of how I can still look after my baby son!

The follow up care Michelle has set up for us is superb, and I look forward to returning to the RAH for this care.

Dear Natasha234

What lovely feedback of your experience in our Emergency Department. Thank you for sharing this and identifying Michelle's care afforded to you. I will ensure Michelle sees this.

Wishing you a speedy recovery from your wound as you'll definitely require both hands to look after your Baby Son.

Take care and thank you again for using Care Opinion.

Gerry

Hi Natasha234

I'm so sorry to learn of the injury to your finger and hope you are doing well. Congratulations on the arrival of your baby son. I appreciate such an injury will be especially difficult when trying to care for your baby.

I see Gerry has already acknowledged your kind feedback for Michelle who managed your care within the Emergency Department. Its sounds as though Michelle did a fantastic job, so well done to her.

I note your comment about NHS 24 keeping you waiting for three hours. I'm sorry to learn of this. It would be good for me to understand this in more detail. I'm not clear on whether you mean wait time to access NHS 24, or the time you were kept waiting within the Out of Hours Dept. It may be helpful to explain, following a telephone call to NHS 24, should a patient be referred for onward care and attend at the Out of Hours or A&E, then NHS 24 has no control over the wait time experienced. This would require to be addressed by the local Health Board.

Should you care to share any further detail with me, I would be pleased to hear from you. You can contact me on 07814 299944 or email Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

With best wishes.

Shona
