"Cancer Treatment During Covid"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Surgery

(as a relative),

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer just as we were going into covid lockdown in March 2020. We feel she did not get full treatment due to covid restrictions as well as her age (87) and she was kept on oestrogen medication for 2 years before getting an option to have a lumpectomy and removal of lymph glands.

She had the surgery in January 2023 and it was thought to be successful but a scan in July 2023 showed the cancer had spread extensively to her liver and other lymph glands. She was given a prognosis of 2-3 months but died at the end of August. While the family acknowledge the covid virus put NHS services under extreme pressure in that first wave, we feel cancer treatment should not have been side-lined in favour of covid services given it was equally life threatening. My mother was an active person for her age and up until 3 weeks before her death, she had been attending activities she enjoyed and could have had a few more active years had she received more aggressive treatment in those previous 3 years.
