"I am eternally grateful for the care and support I received"

About: The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73) The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Neonatal Unit

(as a service user),

I feel like this will be a very long post but needed to get across how wonderful my care was.

I have an underlying health condition which means I cannot carry a child until full term as it would affect my condition gravely. I was assigned to Dr Duncan, and her team from the beginning of my pregnancy and a plan to have an early c section was put in place. I was monitored closely, being seen by Dr Duncan, Dr Owen, or someone else on the team at least four weeks early on, then fortnightly as my pregnancy progressed. They ensured my concerns and wishes with my pregnancy were listened to, and respectfully addressed any fears I may have had with regards to myself and my baby. I met with an anaesthetist beforehand, who again talked me through everything that would happen and how I’d be cared for on the day.

My section was scheduled and I cannot rave about the team I had that day enough. I am eternally grateful for the care and support I received. The anaesthetists again explained everything as it was happening, and when I felt faint paused what they were doing to allow my blood pressure to come back up. The surgeons were clear and explained what would happen. I have to give a special mention to Elaine - who let me rest my head on her shoulders when the local anaesthetic was being administered, rubbed my back when I felt frightened and made me feel so calm and safe with her, it was like having a family member there. And Rebecca - who looked after my boy when I was still being stitched back up, she brought him over to me and let me know where she was taking him to clean him up and check him over and kept talking to me about how he was as I couldn’t see him. To have Rebecca continuously let me know how he was is something I will forever be grateful for.

My son was taken to NICU and I cannot thank the staff enough for all the done for him. Susan and two other girls (in the panic of the situation I have completely forgot their names, sorry!) were fantastic and looked after my boy with care and keep us updated with what was going on as we sat beside him.

I also have to thank the entire team of ward 68. I am so grateful and lucky that my boy and I were cared for by such a wonderful team. Amanda who helped me when I cried and felt too tired to feed. Bernie who also went above and beyond to listen to how I felt and cared for us. Janette for making me laugh when I needed. But again, the whole team were angels and I know this is only a few words, but I hope it at least makes their day a little brighter. I will forever be grateful that in the 8 days we were on the ward for, we had an excellent team.

Thank you everyone!

Dear gemzrivs93,

Thank you so much for posting your story, it really was a pleasure to read. I am glad that despite your health concerns you had a positive pregnancy experience. I will be delighted to pass on your gratitude to Dr Duncan and Dr Owen for guiding you through your pregnancy and listening to any worries you had.

The theatre team will also be pleased to receive your feedback, I will ensure Rebecca and Elaine include the whole team. I will also pass this on to the Neonatal team and the staff in ward 68.

I hope you are both doing well. Thank you again for taking the time to tell you story, it is a wonderful endorsement of the care the staff strive to achieve every day!

Best Wishes,

Tracy Orr
