"They make my Dad feel special, wanted, important and valuable"

My Dad attends Crozier Lodge day centre. At the beginning he was very reluctant to join in and told me everyone was really old, truth be told dad may be the oldest man there, as he is in his late eighties!

The staff advised me to continue to bring him even if for part of the morning and collect him early, which I did and of course they knew exactly what they were doing. Dad gradually got to chat with others and join in with activities and lunches and now he is up and ready to go on Mondays … it is one less day for him to look at four walls and miss mom. He is learning new things, playing dominoes, arts and crafts, chair based exercises, sing a longs, chit chatting with other attendees and enjoying all the company and diversity of the group as well as a lunch with dessert!

The other day I peeped my head into the room where he was making old transcripts paper by soaking it with old tea bags, he was concentrating so hard and enjoying it so much and conversing with staff, it made my heart melt.

The staff are so brilliant, they know how to make him feel special and wanted and important and valuable. This is a very special  place for our seniors, it is not just special but essential.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share such lovely feedback about Crozier Lodge Day Centre in Banbridge.

The heading “They make my Dad feel special, wanted, important and valuable,” is wonderful. This is exactly the ethos that all staff work to within Crozier Lodge. I have shared this feedback with the team and it is great reminder to them of how valuable the work they do is. Infact this week across the SHSCT on the 14th September we are holding a Support Worker Appreciation Day to really celebrate the work of Support Staff!

Quite often the feedback we receive from service users themselves is that more than anything what they want is staff to take the time to get to know them, spend quality time with them, and help them build connections between others who attend the Day Centre.

You raise a really great point about how difficult the adjustment can be for anyone who starts to attend a Day Centre. This is why one of the approaches we use is a gradual settling in period and working closely with family members who know their loved one best. In your Dad’s case this worked perfectly for him. I am also so pleased that you were able to ‘peep your head’ into the room your Dad was in. We want families to know that we do have an open door policy (in line with Governance policies and procedures) and we work at all times with openness and transparency. Older people in society have many issues to deal with including loneliness, isolation, grief, and loss of or reduced independence. In Crozier Lodge our focus is always on what gives the service user moments of joy and what they CAN do.

On behalf of all the team at Crozier Lodge we are so pleased to know that we are making such a difference. Just today we added the following to our staff photo gallery, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” (Maya Angelou).
