"ADHD shared care chaos"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as the patient),

After suffering with mental health problems since the age of 4, I was led to believe I may have had undiagnosed ADHD. I approached my GP with my thoughts and after him telling me it could be years on an NHS waiting list, but if I could afford to go private and take the burden off the NHS, he'd agree to shared care, I paid for a private diagnosis with Clinical Partners.

After receiving the diagnosis and paying for a number of private tests (heart, blood etc) I was put on Lisdexamfetamine. I continued to pay for treatment for a year while they made sure the medication was stabilised in me, at which point my GP took over care.  That was a year ago, and things were going great - my life was so much better - I grieved what I could've been had I been diagnosed earlier.

Unfortunately we had to move house and with that switch GPs. My new GP immediately stated they refused to prescribe Lisdexamfetamine and I would need to go on the NHS assessment wait list again. Meanwhile I've run out of medication (quite a few months ago now) and my house of cards is starting to collapse.

I'm worried if I try to switch GPs again I'll just be viewed as drug seeking (in the bad way, not the legitimate way) and wouldn't know how to find someone who will prescribe it at this point anyway since it wasn't really shared care any longer - my GP had taken over everything.  Do I go back to the private practice? Will that kick me off the NHS wait list? I can't afford to pay for it forever, and I don't even know what the process would be if I did go back to Clinical Partners.

I also won't make it the years I've heard the NHS may take. I'm frustrated and scared

Dear House of Cards

I am sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing with you GP and that you have been left feeling frustrated and scared. GP practices in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde operate their own feedback and complaints systems, and, are not registered to respond to feedback received via Care Opinion and will not see your feedback. I am unable to answer your questions, therefore, can I suggest that you contact the Practice Manager to discuss these?

Or you may want to contact the Family Health Service Complaints Team who can provide advice about raising a complaint about GP practices. GCHSCPComplaints@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Alternatively, The Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS) may be able to support you with this issue. This is an independent and confidential organisation. PASS can help you give feedback, raise concerns or make a complaint about any health service, including GP practices.

You can contact PASS on 0800 917 2127 or visit their website at Patient Advice & Support Service | Citizens Advice Scotland (www.cas.org.uk ).

Regards

Nicole
