"Overall good but room for improvement"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Elective Overnight Stay Centre/Gynaecology Ward

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

It has been alright on the Female Surgical Ward. The staff have all been fine. They explain things well to me and have a very good attitude. Jenny in particular has been brilliant.

However, there have been a few things I have noticed that have not been followed through during my stay – for instance cannulas not being changed and nobody there to change it. I have noticed you have to be on top of things yourself. I also noticed when I arrived that the area around my bedside wasn’t very clean. There was blood on my side table and blood on the floor. I had to go and get a wipe and clean it myself. Otherwise, everything has been clean and comfortable enough for me. However, you find that the bathrooms start clean in the morning, but gets progressively worse as the day goes on. The noise levels at night haven’t been too bad. There are no other improvements I can think of.

Dear Natbs79,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback on Care Opinion. I am sorry that during your inpatient stay you found issues with the cleanliness of the environment and had concerns regarding the care of your cannula.

In regard to ward cleanliness I have raised this with the Sister of Female Surgical Ward to highlight with staff your experience and we will review our cleaning folders and do spot checks.

In regard to the management of cannula we have guidelines regarding replacement of peripheral cannula which is ideally at 72hrs, I apology if this was not followed and I am disappointed you did not feel comfortable to raise your concerns with the nursing staff who provided care to you. Again I will discuss this with the Ward Sr.

Thank you for highlighting where we have not performed well, we really appreciate your valuable feedback.

Wishing you continued good health.

Regards

Josephine Matthews
