"Newspapers & Isolated Patients"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / General Medicine (Wards 3, 4, 5 &46)

(as the patient),

During my time in Glasgow Royal Infirmary, the staff etc have been great. I’m young & independent. Next to me was a particularly infirm elderly gentleman, who had no visitors in the week he has been here due to his wife also being infirm. Some of the staff make an effort to chat with him which is lovely. Although I’d have liked to have seen more, I appreciate how busy they are and how much work they have to do.

At home he told me he reads a paper daily, but hasn’t had a paper since being in here, and has no access to TV etc via smartphone in hosp, so sits bored all day.

There has to be a benefit in us providing people, especially the elderly with newspapers or a trolley service to increase mental wellbeing and reduce isolation surely?

Dear Augustgk66

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am glad that you had a positive experience at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Unfortunately, we don’t have a trolley service at Glasgow Royal Infirmary but we can discuss this with colleagues.

I am sorry to hear that a fellow patient did not have any visitors during his hospital stay. We know how important it is for people to maintain contact with family and friends whilst in hospital. We have a person centred virtual visiting service. This service helps patients to keep in touch with their relatives and friends using video calls. All wards have an iPad which patients can use to contact their family members; staff are able to assist with this.

We can also arrange for volunteers to visit patients who do not have any visitors. We are currently recruiting for a Volunteer Projects Manager, and hope to significantly expand this service in the coming months, providing just the sort of company you outline as beneficial. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I hope you are feeling better.

Best wishes

Nicole
