"It took me quite a while to find someone to help."

About: Borders Mental Health Services / Mental Health Older Adults Service

(as a carer),

After many years (7+) of trying to get support/help for my mum's mental and emotional health, we eventually got a referral. After a long wait (6mths+), and then a bit of a false start (3mths+), got to see someone who actually listened and engaged with my mum and I about our concerns/issues and need for support and help.

It was great to finally have a knowledgeable professional who actually listened and tried to help us with our concerns for my mum's mental health.  We eventually got a diagnosis and help with guidance around how best to support my mum and significantly improve my mum's mental health and daily life.

It took me quite a while to find someone to help.  Sadly the issues faced throughout the NHS continue to multiply and have quite concerning impacts.  Particularly for the vulnerable and/or elderly.

I was sad to hear that there is talk of further cutbacks and cost savings in this already underfunded and overstretched area.  It is a simple fact that without further additional investment (and practical application of such) in this area.  More and more preventable problems will arise, leading to further and more serious issues and demands being placed on many other areas of the NHS.
