Took an elderly family member to the walk in centre first who advised to go straight to accident and emergency for swollen legs and black outs leading to falls. Most recent fall resulted in severe skin damage and tears in his arm. Arrived at Accident and emergency but we didn't even get chance to explain the issues, just got sent to an alternative part of the hospital. 4 hours later they send us back to Accident and emergency. By this time it's packed. No communication from professionals as to what the treatment plan was. Occupational therapist did an assessment (she was really nice) however, she arranged a home visit for 3pm. Told us this at 2.15pm, family member got discharged at 2.45pm. Had to rearrange the appointment ourselves. From the start they told us there was nothing wrong with BP to be leaving with a prescription for medication for low BP??? Our family member is 86 and from start to finish the whole process took 30 hours. All the time he was sat in Accident and emergency He was offered 2 drinks and 1 sandwich and cold toast.
Unfortunately there was lots of people who didn't need to be there causing delays to others who were in greater need.
I worry for the future of healthcare in our area.
