"Thanks for excellent treatment and attention."

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics Royal Alexandra Hospital / General Surgery (wards 19, 20, 24, 26 &29) Royal Alexandra Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 21-23)

(as the patient),

I’m currently under the care of Mr Nunn at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. I want to provide some positive comment on my treatment and attention.

In July, I attended Inverclyde Royal Hospital with an exceptionally painful knee, I was quickly assessed by Dr Qasim. After blood and various other tests I was diagnosed with a septic infection, most probably in my knee, with a possible link to the titanium plate fitted to my left leg in December 2018 during an osteotomy and ACL rebuild.

I was then asked to transfer to the Trauma Assessment Unit at Royal Alexandra Hospital where the duty Consultant (maybe Mr Davulurw) thought that it was inflammation. I was prescribed co-codamol and ibuprofen and due to holiday the next week, I was asked to return on the day before I went for further blood tests. The co-codamol and ibuprofen helped to reduce the pain meantime.

That morning I was seen by Mr Kokkinakis and Dr Foreman who after blood and urine tests gave me the bad news that my holiday would need to be cancelled and due to high CRP levels I would be transferred to a ward for intravenous antibiotics. A plan was then to be established for treatment, including the possible removal of the titanium plate. Both Mr Kokkinakis and Dr Foreman had the unique ability to deliver bad news but still leave me smiling! They are an absolute credit to their profession.

Next, I was transferred to Ward 23, Room 4 and a couple of days later, Mr Kokkinakis successfully removed the titanium plate.

Having spent over 30 years in front line public service, I know only too well that the public generally only complain and praise is very rare. Despite crippling budget cuts and working conditions the attitude of the teams on Ward 23 is exemplary. Between them they have created a tremendous family atmosphere for patients and relatives who are admitted and most probably expecting the worst! For example, due to shortages in porters I even had Doctors taking me to and from MRI and ultrasound scans on their break, just to make sure the scans were completed on time.

Unfortunately, I only have a few names of those who went above and beyond in their various duties. The names I have are in no particular order but include:

Mr Nunn; Mr Kokkinakis; Dr Foreman; Dr Glass, Dr  Walker; Phil (the pill) - pharmacist; Student nurses - Julie, Juliet, Cammi & Cara; Nurses - Yvonne, Emma, Claire, Jen & Tracey; Auxilary nurses - Kirsty, Aimee & Stacey; and finally, Kay, who keeps everything ticking over in the ward and spirits up!

Five days later, I was transferred to Inverclyde Royal Hospital where I was lucky enough to met up again with Dr Glass. Dr Glass is undoubtedly a star of the future. His honesty and enthusiasm towards ensuring patients under his care recover is outstanding and should be recognised. Dr Glass makes you feel like a friend rather than a patient.

I again met up with Dr Foreman. Dr Foreman is always very approachable, has a calming nature and naturally puts patients at ease. Yet another future star.

Overall and despite my very unexpected stay in both RAH and IRH I am happy to provide a glowing report of my experience. I would really appreciate if my sincere thanks are past on to all involved in my treatment and rehabilitation.

In addition to my thanks, my family also extend their sincere gratitude.

Many thanks
