"Everyone was so kind and gentle"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Blossom Ward (Paediatrics)

(as a service user),

When my son was 4.5 weeks old he became mottled, wasn't taking bottles as well as he had been and was lethargic. After spending a week from his birth in hospital unwell, I didn't want to take any risks and my gut was telling me he wasn't well at all. I called the GP who promptly called me back and told me to scoop him and go to A&E. Don't gather anything, just go. Hearing this was even more terrifying so we rushed to A&E, where we were seen immediately. Paediatricians came from Blossom to assess him and do some tests. We were admitted for double antibiotics. He was becoming more and more mottled and was tachycardic.

The ward was clean, tidy and well organised. Staff were friendly and helpful. They pulled the bed down for me as I was recovering from a C-section and made sure I was fed. Toys were offered and provided for my baby without me having to ask for anything. Staff carried out obs consistently, listened to my concerns and chatted with me.

I requested help for his pain as the pain was only raising his heart rate further and it was hard to watch and listen to his cry. We ended up staying for a week and, although they couldn't find the cause (his cultures and other tests were coming back clear), they treated him fully and one consultant advised to stay for 24 hours after treatment ended in case something presented itself, as the doctors were obviously concerned enough to treat with multiple antibiotics without knowing the cause and the level of mottling. Thankfully he recovered well and we were allowed to go home.

We are so incredibly grateful to Faith and all of the other staff who were part of my baby's care. Everyone was so kind and gentle with him and checking in on me as well. Someone sat with him for a while so I could go for a walk to clear my head which was really appreciated. The staff know what they are doing. They are in the right jobs and deserve all the praise. My baby is now a happy, healthy 6 month old.

I am pleased to hear that you were well informed and supported by our wonderful team who go above and beyond for their patients and their families. It is such an anxious time when your baby isn't well and it lovely to read how well the medical and nursing staff have supported you and your baby, taking time to listen to you, supporting you to have some time away from the Ward as well as providing toys for your child and a comfortable bed for you to rest. I am delighted that you were impressed with the facilities and I hope this made your stay much more comfortable.

I will be sure to share your lovely feedback with the team - they will be very thankful for the kind words.
