"0ccupational therapy"

About: Victoria Hospital / Occupational Therapy

(as the patient),

I am 77 years old and a widow, I was recently told that I had cancer for the third time.  I felt confused , angry and full of disbelief. During the treatment session the muscle in my leg was damaged and that weekend I fell and damaged my knee. Phoned the doctors and they said to put hot and cold compresses on it which I did, but it has taken weeks to heal and I still have the odd twinge.

During this time I phoned the Occupational Therapy Department and  asked for some help as I was having trouble getting off the toilet. Putting my rubbish out to the buckets was painful and dangerous as I had to hang onto the wall to go down three the steps. Sure enough the Occupational Therapist came and fixed me up with the essential and necessary equipment  much to my relief. Many thanks.

Dear Onsja

My name is Siobhan McIlroy, and I am the Head of Patient Experience. NHS Fife welcomes all feedback, so thank you for taking the time to post on Care Opinion. I am sorry for the delay in you receiving a response.

It sounds as though you have been going through a very difficult time. I am sorry that you have been diagnosed with cancer for a third time and sustained damage to the muscle in your leg which caused you to fall and damage your knee further.

I am delighted that Occupational Therapy listened to your concerns and provided support quickly, an excellent example of patient-centred care. The team will be delighted with your feedback.

If you wish to discuss the damage, you sustained to your leg during treatment. Please feel free to email me your contact details, Siobhan.McIlroy@nhs.scot.

Thank you again for sharing your story. Best wishes and take care, Siobhan

Update posted by Onsja (the patient)

Thank you for taking the time to respond tor my story. I really felt so low and nobody cared.

The Occupational Therapist was just so lovely listening to my plight, she new exactly what I needed also fixed my raised 4" toilet seat. She has since kept in touch to make sure that the appropriate equipment had arrived.

As for the accidental mishap to my muscle it was part of the treatment and I feel much better now. Thanks to everyone who has helped and listened.
