In July 2022 I collapsed, was rushed to Worthing A&E (even though I live in East Sussex - I had seen a dentist a couple of days before who told me I grinded me teeth in sleep, needed cracked tooth removed and a gum guard, which I queried because never had any issues with teeth grinding but they were adamant).
After around 12 hours I was rushed to St. Richards where they operated, spotted the infection (similar to sepsis - it was life threatening), so I was put into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for a week while surgeons battled to save my life (I wish they had not bothered and let me die).
My treatment in ICU was great, I was well looked after but it was what happened to me when I left the ICU and had a steroid induced ICU psychosis which was left untreated for 4 days and nights. I feel staff deceived my family by telling them I was just a bit confused.
I was on the move constantly in my state of delirium with staff ill equipped to deal with me or understand what I was going through. I was trying to jump out of windows and all sorts. I was trapped in a living never ending nightmare and my treatment was appalling.
I have never felt so traumatized and dehumanized in all my life. What happened to me never should have happened and I would like to share my story, get involved with patient experience so I can feedback on what should have happened from my patient experience.
There was no need for me to be humiliated and degraded in the way I was. I feel my treatment was unacceptable and I dread to think of other people going through what I went through and the ramifications from this.
