"Colonoscopy biopsies"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Combined Assessment Unit (CAU) University Hospital Ayr / Endoscopy

(as the patient),

My doctor referred me for an urgent colonoscopy after noticing blood in my poo. 4 polyps were removed and a swelling was noted at the sigmoid , so biopsies were taken and sent off.

After the colonoscopy my rectal bleeding worsened so I returned to my doctor who could only prescribe steroid suppositories for 2 weeks to help stop bleeding and advised I contact the surgeons secretary to speed up results of biopsies.  I did this they said they would chase them up but told me if my symptoms worsened I was not to suffer and to present myself to hospital. The steroids made no difference whatsoever.

Meanwhile my symptoms have worsened, rectal bleeding has now became dark, almost black and with large clots. I have pain in my lower abdomen and down sides and back. I returned to my doctor who was very concerned and was going to arrange an ambulance to go to hospital but I said I could drive. They weren't keen but said if I felt worse on way to pull over and call an ambulance. I was to go to the combined assessment unit. Where they would be aware of my arrival.

On arrival it was clear they were busy so would have to wait. An hour and a half later the surgeon was paged and a cannula inserted. They took blood and checked blood count. I was told that nothing could be done until the biopsies came back. I am a single parent to a young child with no support and this is my main concern. I asked for a direct answer if I was to go home and continue to wait for results would I be ok? I was assured I would be ok! I have no idea how they could assure this when they don’t know any diagnosis.

However, I took her word, the cannula was removed and I went home. I have continued to call the secretary who hoped they would have the results by end of week but it has now been 6 weeks and my mental health is suffering.  I’ve lost almost 2 stone in weight and passing blood and clots up to 6 times a day. I am constantly exhausted and also breathless just walking up several stairs. I have got to the point where I am scared to eat as this just worsens the need to go to the toilet. I am also continually passing putrid sulphuric smelling wind.

I’ve tried calling the secretary and got a different one who couldn’t find me on the list and that my biopsies were not down as a priority! However, should I feel worse to present myself to hospital!  They are joking right? What for?

I feel no one is taking me or my symptoms seriously and I am just being fobbed off. I am at the end of my tether…no one seems to know anything or appear to care either way. My mind is working overtime and of course I’m thinking the worst as no one can tell me anything to make this any easier or clearer as to what is going on!

I’m depending on neighbours to keep an eye on my child and this whole experience is nothing other than mental and physical torture. Every day gets worse and my fear is that when these results finally come back any treatment I could have would then be too late! I thought the NHS was supposed to be a caring service and I feel there has been no care or consideration given regarding my symptoms or my circumstances….it’s an absolute disgrace.

Dear warmcz35

I am so sorry that you experienced a frustrating visit to the hospital. I shall pass these comments on to the surgical team that were dealing with you. I hope that you receive answers soon.

Unfortunately we are a very busy unit and try and get to every patient as quick as we possibly can in order to try and get them seen. All feedback is gratefully received as we strive to improve services every day.

Kind regards

Dannii Henson (SCN - CAU Ayr)
