"Removal of Cannula following day surgery"

About: Goole & District Hospital (Acute) / General surgery

(as a service user),

I was ready to go home after a Gynaecology Day surgery and up this point had received the most amazing care from all staff.

Sadly when it came to removing my cannula, the nurse that removed it, instead of gently sliding the cannula out she decided to lift it up and pull it out so I felt it scrap on my hand along the vein and was absolute agony.

I have had many cannulas in and removed without issue and I know how they did it was incorrect. Not only did they seem surprised that it was bleeding but they removed the gauze, squeezed my hand very hard ( it was already really sore by this point) and was about to leave it without a plaster once it had stopped bleeding, until I'd said that I would prefer not to leave the hospital with an open hole in my hand.

Just awful. Today my hand is sore, bruised and I have reduced feeling in 2 of my fingers which I hope is only temporary.
