"Extra care given to ensure she stayed warm"

About: Causeway Hospital / Acute Elder Medicine 1 Causeway Hospital / Stroke rehabilitation

(as a relative),

My mother was admitted to this ward after becoming ill.   She had previously had a stroke. She was initially placed on a side ward but after one night there was moved into main ward. There was no need space available for her in this ward so he bed was placed in a corner beside a door leading to an external balcony.

There was a constant flow of cold air coming in the door even though it was closed.   I spoke with the staff and was informed they had highlighted this earlier.  My mother is in her late seventies and quickly after one night in this location had shown signs of a head cold.

The nurse explained all needs where full and that they were trying to find a more suitable place for my mother.

The nurse was extremely understanding to my concerns and as my mother had been receiving excellent care from them I felt more reassured that all was being done to sort the matter.

Unfortunately a bed did not become available until the 3rd night but at this time my mother was being released.

I can't thank the staff enough for the care they individually gave to my mother that resulted in me being able to bring her home.

It saddens me to think that there were no other suitable beds available in the hospital for my mother and potentially someone else's facing a similar situation who's family member could end up with further health issues.   It is difficult for the patient, family and nursing staff to have to accept this situation and I wish that more could be done to support those in the caring profession and those that need it to ensure they recover quickly and don't end up having additional issue.

I would like to thank all the staff for their care of my mother, she is very special to us, and thanks to all of you and the extra care you gave her to ensure she stayed warm whilst she recovered we have gratefully for her home with us again.

Hi Hospital23,

I am Nicky Butcher, assistant clinical services manager at Causeway Hospital, over medical wards.

I am sorry to hear that your mum hasnt been well, and wish her a speedy recovery.

I am sorry to hear that the bed space she was nursed in was cold. It is an escalation bed space near the balcony doors. Unfortunately due to huge demand for beds on a daily basis, at times we make use of additional spaces. This is to try to decrease waits in the Emergency Department for patients.

I will investigate with Estates why there is cold air coming in, to sort the problem.

I apologise for any undue distress, and am delighted your mum is home again.

Thanks

Nicky
