"Referral for assessment and diagnosis"

About: Children's Specialist Health Services / Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was referred to CAHMS in October 2021 and we have received our diagnosis June 2023! It has been a long haul and to be entirely honest - an isolated journey.

For the largest part we have been waiting with lack of support and guidance however the last few months have been really quick and lots covered to reach our diagnosis today. Since a specific member of staff took on our case, she has been amazing and has really powered forward to get us to the point we are at today and for that i will be forever grateful. She has a lovely, caring manner and is really empathetic with the parents she liaisons with- i felt she really is walking the journey with us and i know if i have any questions or worries i can drop her an email and she will respond as quick as she can.

My overall dealings with CAHMS shows me a service that is vital but lacks resources which creates long waiting lists which increases parents anxieties and feelings of helplessness. The people employed are working above and beyond (all which i am so appreciative of) but there is sadly just not enough man power to keep up with demand.

Dear Parent,

Thank you for taking the time to write and send feedback about the experience your family has had in CAMHS. I would like to apologise for the long wait that you had before receiving the diagnosis.

The CAMHS service is committed to improving the mental health and well being of young people and is currently going through a significant service improvement and redesign, with a focus on improving waiting times in order to address concerns about longer waits for young people. I was glad to hear that your experience of attending the service was positive and how much you valued the work of your individual clinician.

This feedback is very much appreciated and I will ensure that this is shared with the clinical teams. I hope that your daughter is continuing to find her CAMHS treatment beneficial and send my best wishes to you both.

Many thanks again,

Jane Killin
