"II can't praise the staff enough - excellent patient care"

About: New Victoria Hospital / Day surgery Scottish Ambulance Service / Patient Transport Service

(as a service user),

I was recently admitted to the Victoria Infirmary for day surgery, however, my operation was slightly more than anticipated and instead of getting home, I was transferred to another hospital for recovery.

I can’t praise the staff of the Victoria highly enough. My consultant, Mr Marshall was very kind and thoroughly explained my procedure at the day clinic.

On the day I was admitted the staff made me feel very welcome and put me at ease straight away.

As the time for procedure grew nearer, the anaesthetist came to speak with me. She was aware how anxious I was and immediately calmed me down with her caring and gentle manner. She also recognised how cold I was, probably due to nerves, and straight away she asked for a hot blanket to be brought and a heat pad for my neck. All the while chatting away making feel relaxed and more importantly, in safe hands.

When my time came to go to theatre, she took it upon herself, much to the surprise of the nursing staff, to wheel me down herself.

She administered my anaesthetic while holding my hand and chatting then I woke up in recovery.

This lady is one of the kindest most compassionate women I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I am annoyed I don’t have her name,  hopefully someone will recognise her through my description. I can say with my hand on my heart this lady is a true Angel and a credit to her profession.

As I said earlier, my surgery required me to be transferred for recovery and the staff made sure my daughter was phoned with regular updates and information.

The ambulance staff were fantastic with me and delivered me and my belongings to my next hospital.

When I think of the Victoria Infirmary I think of the kind and caring staff. Even observing how they interacted with other patients I can safely say they are dedicated beyond words.

If I am ever unfortunate enough to be admitted to hospital in the future, I hope it’s the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow.

Dear Charlie234

Thank you for sharing your story. It must have been a very worrying time so I am heartened to read that you are happy with the care you received from NHS Scotland.

If you would like me to pass on your thanks to the ambulance crew may I ask that you contact our Patient Experience Team at sas.feedback@nhs.scot with your name, Care Opinion name, the hospital and date we transferred you.

Kind regards

David

Dear Charlie234

Many thanks for taking the time to share your experience as a patient in our unit. I am so pleased that your patient journey with us was a positive one. We always strive to get patients home on the same day of surgery, but as in your case sometimes it's just not possible, however, I am delighted that this transfer to another site went well and that your relatives were kept well informed. The words you have used to describe the staff as kind, caring and dedicated is praise indeed and is the standard of care we aim for each and every day here in the Day surgery Unit, I am so glad that you felt this as a patient.

I will ensure that your feedback is shared with all of Mr Marshall’s team, including the anaesthetist you so warmly described. Feedback from our patients is always greatly appreciated and helps the team morale tremendously.

Wising you well on your recovery.
